What is Levotuss syrup and what is it used for?
Levotuss contains the active substance levodropropizin, a substance that belongs to a group of medicines called cough suppressants. This medicine is used to treat cough symptoms. Talk to your doctor if you do not feel better or if you feel worse after 2 weeks of treatment.
What you need to know before you take Levotuss
Do not take Levotuss
- if you are allergic to levodropropizin or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6);
- if you suffer from a disease of the bronchi, characterized by a high production of mucus (bronchial hypersecretion)
- if you suffer from certain disorders of the respiratory mucosa since birth characterized by reduced ability to expel mucus (Kartagener's syndrome, ciliary dyskinesia);
- if you are pregnant or breastfeeding (see the subsection "Pregnancy and breastfeeding"); Do not give this medicine to children less than two years of age (see "Children" subsection).
Levotuss warnings and precautions
Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking Levotuss:
- if you suffer from severe impairment of kidney function (severe renal insufficiency with creatinine clearance below 35 ml / min);
- if you are an elderly person, as sensitivity to various medicines is altered in the elderly;
- if you are taking sedative medicines to treat anxiety and are a particularly sensitive individual (see the sub-section "Other medicines and Levotuss").
Cough medicines only treat symptoms and should only be used pending diagnosis of the underlying cause and / or treatment effect of the underlying disease. Therefore do not use for prolonged treatments. After a short treatment period (2 weeks) without noticeable results, consult your doctor. Levotuss does not contain gluten, therefore it is not contraindicated if you have celiac disease. Children
Do not give this medicine to children under 2 years of age (see the sub-section "Do not take Levotuss").
Other medicines and Levotuss
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken or might take any other medicines. Take this medicine with caution and tell your doctor if you are taking sedative medicines used to treat anxiety.
Levotuss in Pregnancy and breastfeeding
If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine. Do not take Levotuss if you are suspected or known to be pregnant or breast-feeding (see section "Do not take Levotuss"). Avoid using this medicine if you are planning a maternity leave.
Driving and using machines
This medicine may cause drowsiness (see section 4 "Possible side effects"). If you get this symptom, avoid driving or using machines.
Levotuss contains sucrose
This medicine contains 4 g of sucrose per dose (10 ml): if you have been diagnosed by your doctor with intolerance to some sugars, contact your doctor before taking this medicine. To be taken into consideration in people with diabetes mellitus.
Levotuss contains methyl para-hydroxybenzoate and propyl para-hydroxybenzoate
The medicine contains methyl para-hydroxybenzoate and propyl para-hydroxybenzoate (parabens), which are known to cause hives. In general, para-hydroxybenzoates can cause delayed reactions, such as contact dermatitis and rarely immediate reactions with manifestation of hives and bronchospasm (narrowing of the bronchi, which can cause difficulty in breathing).
How to take Levotuss
Always take this medicine exactly as described in this leaflet or as directed by your doctor or pharmacist. If in doubt, consult your doctor or pharmacist.
Take this medicine until the symptoms go away. If you do not notice any improvement after 2 weeks of treatment, stop the treatment and consult your doctor.
The recommended doses are:
Adults: 10 ml of syrup, up to 3 times a day, at intervals of at least 6 hours between one administration and the next.
Use in children over 2 years:
The recommended dose, based on the child's weight, is:
- 3 ml of syrup if the child weighs between 10 and 20 kg,
- 5 ml of syrup if the child weighs between 20 and -30 kg.
The syrup can be administered up to 3 times a day, at least 6 hours apart between one administration and another.
Warning: do not exceed the indicated doses.
Method of administration of Levotuss
The package includes a measuring cup with notches corresponding to 3 - 5 and 10 ml. To open the package, press the cap firmly and turn counterclockwise at the same time. The syrup must be drunk. It is recommended to take and administer the medicine between meals, on an empty stomach.
If you take more Levotuss than you should
In case of accidental ingestion / intake of an excessive dose of Levotuss, notify your doctor immediately or go to the nearest hospital. In most cases, patients experienced abdominal pain and vomiting. If you have any further questions on the use of this medicine, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
Possible side effects
Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
Most of the adverse reactions that occurred following levodropropizin were non-serious and symptoms resolved with discontinuation of therapy and, in some cases, with specific drug treatment.
The reported adverse reactions have an unknown frequency (frequency cannot be estimated from the available data):
- mydriasis (dilation of the pupil of the eye), bilateral blindness (affects both eyes);
- allergic and anaphylactoid reactions, eyelid edema (swelling of the eyelid), angioneurotic edema (swelling of the deep dermis and subcutaneous tissue which can also affect the mucous membranes), urticaria;
- nervousness, drowsiness, personality alteration, personality disorder;
- syncope (transient loss of consciousness), dizziness, vertigo, tremors, paraesthesia (abnormal sensation on the skin, tingling), tonic-clonic convulsion (grand mal) and petit attack, hypoglycemic coma (loss of consciousness caused by a severe reduction blood glucose values);
- palpitations, tachycardia (rapid heartbeat), atrial bigeminy (irregular heartbeat);
- hypotension (low blood pressure);
- dyspnoea (difficulty breathing), cough, edema (swelling) of the respiratory tract;
- stomach pain, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea;
- cholestatic hepatitis (inflammation of the liver due to blockage of biliary excretion);
- hives, erythema (redness of the skin), exanthema (rash), itching, angioedema (swelling of the face and mucous membranes), skin reactions, glossitis (inflammation of the tongue) and aphthous stomatitis (painful ulcers in the mouth);
- epidermolysis (rare and potentially serious skin diseases);
- weakness of the lower limbs;
- general malaise, generalized edema (swelling), asthenia (physical weakness).
Additional side effects in breastfed infants of mothers who have taken levodropropizin
One case has been reported of somnolence, hypotonia (decreased muscle tone) and vomiting in a newborn after the nursing mother received levodropropizin. Symptoms appeared after the feed and resolved spontaneously by suspending breastfeeding for a few feedings. Compliance with the instructions contained in the package leaflet reduces the risk of undesirable effects.

How to store Levotuss
Keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children. Do not use this medicine after the expiry date which is stated on the package. The expiry date refers to the last day of that month. The expiry date indicated refers to the product in intact packaging, correctly stored. Do not throw away any medicines via wastewater or household waste. Ask your pharmacist how to throw away medicines you no longer use. This will help protect the environment.
