Milk Thistle has antioxidant, hepatoprotective, nephroprotective, anti-inflammatory and anti-ulcer activities. Hepatoprotective effects have been demonstrated both in vitro and in vivo. The hepatoprotective mechanism is exercised through multiple mechanisms; in fact, milk thistle increases protein synthesis in hepatocytes, stimulating liver regeneration. Furthermore, silymarin and silibinin (silybin) are powerful antioxidants, capable of reacting with free radicals and transforming them into more stable and less reactive compounds and therefore unable to cause tissue damage. Silymarin and silybin inhibit lipid peroxidation and increase the production of glutathione, a compound involved in the detoxification of harmful substances in the liver, stomach and intestines, as well as the superoxide dismutase enzyme. The antioxidant action is relevant since free radicals are involved in various pathological forms, including inflammation, fibrosis and hepatic necrosis. Milk thistle inhibits the synthesis of inflammatory mediators, such as prostaglandins, leukotrienes and interleukins. Due to its bitter - tonic - choleretic characteristics, it is recommended to use it in forms of gastric atony. It has a vascular tonic action, capable of increasing blood pressure, thanks to the presence of tyramine. Its anti-haemorrhagic and weakly spasmolytic properties explain its use in less-metrorrhagia, epistaxis and hemorrhoids.
