What it is and what it is used for
Gaviscon is a medicine that belongs to the class of medicines used to treat peptic ulcers (a lesion affecting the inner lining of the stomach) and gastroesophageal reflux (a condition that occurs when the acidic contents of the stomach flow back up into the throat, the esophagus).
Gaviscon is indicated in adults and adolescents (12 – 18 years) and works by relieving the symptoms of occasional heartburn.
What you need to know before taking the medicine
Do not take Gaviscon
- If you are allergic to sodium alginate or sodium bicarbonate or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6), including methyl parahydroxybenzoate (E218) and propyl parahydroxybenzoate (E216) (parabens).
Warnings and precautions
Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking Gaviscon.
In particular, tell your doctor or pharmacist if:
- you suffer, or have suffered in the past, from a kidney disorder that compromises its function (renal failure).
Do not take the medicine for prolonged treatments. If symptoms continue to occur 7 days after starting treatment, consult your doctor.
Children and adolescents
In adolescents (12-18 years) use only in case of real need and under strict medical supervision.
Possible side effects
Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
Side effects are listed below according to their frequency of occurrence:
Very rare (may affect up to 1 in 10,000 people)
- allergic reactions, even serious ones (anaphylactic or anaphylactoid reactions);
- hypersensitivity reactions which can manifest with redness of the skin accompanied by itching (urticaria);
- difficulty breathing (bronchospasm);
- increased gas formation in the stomach and intestines (flatulence), nausea;
- swelling (edema).
