What is Loperamide Hexal for?
LOPERAMIDE HEXAL is indicated for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea. After ileostomy it allows to decrease the number and volume of discharges and to increase their consistency.
Contraindications for Loperamide Hexal
Individual ascertained hypersensitivity to the components LOPERAMIDE HEXAL should not be used when any inhibition of intestinal peristalsis must be avoided. Contraindicated under 12 years.
Loperamide Hexal posology
As for the solution: 2 mg = 30 drops. Acute diarrhea Adults: the starting dose is 4 mg (2 capsules or 2 effervescent tablets or 60 drops); thereafter 2 mg (1 capsule or 1 effervescent tablet or 30 drops) after each subsequent evacuation of unformed (soft) faeces. Maximum daily dose: 16 mg. Chronic diarrhea Normal defecation can almost always be achieved with a dose adapted to each patient. Adults: the starting dose is 4 mg per day (2 capsules or 2 effervescent tablets or 60 drops). This starting dose is adjusted until 1 or 2 stools are formed per day, which is generally possible with a maintenance dose of 1 - 6 capsules or effervescent tablets per day. Decrease the dose as soon as the stool has normalized; stop treatment in case of constipation. The effervescent tablets are dissolved in a glass of water.
Warnings and precautions for use
The drug should not be used in children under 4 years of age due to the possibility of relative overdose, as a consequence of a possible immaturity of hepatic function, essential for the metabolism of loperamide. Keep out of reach of children.
Interactions
There are no known interactions with other drugs.
Undesirable effects with the use of Loperamide Hexal
With the exception of a few rare cases of modest abdominal pain and dry mouth, no undesirable effects have been observed even after prolonged treatment.
Loperamide Hexal in Pregnancy and breastfeeding
In pregnant women, especially in the first trimester, the product should only be used if clearly needed and under direct medical supervision.
