Guaraná is a shrub that grows in the Amazon River (particularly in the regions of Manaus and Parintins). The fruits are small, round and grow in red groups. When they ripen, the fruits and black seeds emerge giving them the appearance of an "eye" of which the Indians tell a legend. South American Indian tribes use guarana to prepare food in various ways, drinks and medicinal substances. Some tribal uses are: helps prevent arteriosclerosis, astringent, stimulant and tonic. Used to treat hypertension, fever, migraine, neuralgia, and dysentery. European researchers began studying guarana (in France and Germany) in 1940, finding that the use of Indians in treating fever, headache, cramps, and as a tonic was well-founded. Guarana is used and well known for its stimulating and thermogenic action. In the United States today, guarana is used to increase mental alertness and physical stamina. Furthermore, it is considered as an energetic for health by millions of Brazilians, who believe that it helps to overcome fatigue and premature aging, as well as having detoxifying functions of the blood and preventive action in case of meteorism, dyspepsia and arteriosclerosis. In 1989, an American study done on a guarana seed extract found that guarana seeds were able to inhibit platelet aggregation and the formation of clots in the blood.
