Lysine is an essential amino acid which cannot be synthesized by the body and must necessarily be taken with food and / or nutritional supplementation. The biologically active form is L-lysine which is found in high concentrations in proteins. It is a constituent of collagen, keratin and precursor of carnitine and niacin (vitamin B3 or PP). It is particularly present in high-protein foods including eggs, meat, legumes, cheeses, and some fish. Lysine plays numerous roles within the body including the synthesis of many proteins, the organization of the collagen structure, the absorption of some minerals and nutrients, the production of carnitine. Given its key role, a lack of lysine can determine the onset of many problems including alterations of the connective tissues, lipid metabolism, anemia, an altered energy metabolism.
