What it is and what it is used for
Rinocidin is a medicine based on naphazoline nitrate (decongestant of the nasal mucosa) and thyrothricin (an antibiotic effective in the local treatment of nasal infections).

This medicine is used in the topical therapy of inflammation of bacterial origin of the nasal mucosa (rhinitis) and paranasal cavities (sinusitis).

Talk to your doctor if you do not feel better or if you feel worse after 7 days

What you need to know before taking the medicine
Do not use Rinocidin
- if you are allergic (hypersensitive) to naphazoline nitrate, thyrothricin, similar substances or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6);
- if you suffer from heart disease;
- if your blood pressure in the arteries is very high (severe arterial hypertension):
- if you have a disease due to high pressure inside the eye called “glaucoma”;
- if you suffer from excessive activity of the gland called the thyroid (hyperthyroidism);
- if you are taking certain medicines to treat depression called “Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs)”;
- if you have stopped taking certain medicines to treat depression called “Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs)” for less than two weeks;
- in children under 12 years of age.

Warnings and precautions
Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before using Rinocidin

- if you are elderly and/or your prostate has an increased volume (prostatic hypertrophy), because your urine may be retained in your bladder (urinary retention).

- if you suffer from heart disease, particularly in case of high blood pressure (hypertension), the use of the medicine will be evaluated from time to time by your doctor

- if sudden symptoms appear such as: severe headache (headache), nausea, vomiting, vision problems. Your doctor may decide to stop therapy. In most cases, these symptoms improve or resolve within a few days following appropriate treatment.

- in case of loss of smell

The use, especially if prolonged, of products that are applied directly to the affected part (topical products) can give rise to sensitization phenomena; in this case it is necessary to interrupt the treatment and, if necessary, consult the doctor who must institute suitable therapy.
The prolonged use of vasoconstrictors (category of medicines to which "Rinocidin" belongs) can alter the normal function of the mucous membrane of the nose and paranasal cavities (paranasal sinuses), also inducing addiction to the medicine. Using the medicine for long periods of time may be harmful.

Children and Adolescents
RINOCIDINA is contraindicated in children under 12 years of age (see paragraph “Do not use Rinocidin”).

Possible side effects
Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
The medicine may cause a worsening of the sensation of stuffiness of the nose, irritation and swelling of the blood vessels of the internal wall of the nose (rebound phenomena of sensitization and congestion of the mucous membranes). The rapid absorption of the medicine through the inflamed internal walls of the nose (mucous membranes) can lead to the following effects that involve the whole organism (systemic):
• an increase in blood pressure in the arteries (arterial hypertension); an excessive slowing of the heartbeat (reflex bradycardia)
• headache (headache)
• disturbances in urination (micturition disorders)
