Characteristics
Salicylic acid is a fat-soluble substance that mixes with the lipids of the stratum corneum and the sebaceous glands of the hair follicles and is able to remove them. Salicylic acid is also able to alter desmosomes (intercellular junctions of corneocytes), reducing cell cohesion and causing an exfoliating effect. It therefore has keratolytic and comedolytic properties. Furthermore, thanks to its ability to inhibit the synthesis of prostaglandins, it has anti-inflammatory properties.
