SODIUM CHLORIDE * 0.9% 500ML

What it is and what it is used for
SODIUM MONIC CHLORIDE is a saline (electrolyte) solution to be injected into a vein. This medicine contains the active ingredient sodium chloride.
SODIUM CHLORIDE is indicated for supplying the body with liquids, sodium and chlorine

What you need to know before taking the medicine
Do not use SODIUM MONICA CHLORIDE
- if sodium levels in the blood are high (hypernatremia);
- if you have excess salts in your body (hydro-saline plethora).

Warnings and precautions
Talk to your doctor or nurse before using SODIUM CHLORIDE

This medicine should be administered to you with caution in the following cases:
- if you suffer from high blood pressure (hypertension);
- if you have heart problems (heart failure);
- if you have a build-up of fluid in your legs or ankles (peripheral edema) or in your lungs (pulmonary edema);
- if your kidneys work poorly (reduced kidney function);
- if you are pregnant and suffer from a condition called pre-eclampsia characterized by high blood pressure, swelling due to accumulation of fluids and the presence of proteins in the urine;
- if you suffer from other conditions that occur when the body retains a lot of sodium (sodium retention).

This medicine should be given to you with great caution if you have any of the following conditions:
- if your heart works poorly (congestive heart failure);
- if you have severe kidney problems (severe renal failure);
- if you have fluid accumulation (edema) and your body retains salts (salt retention);
- if you are taking medicines used to treat inflammation (corticosteroids) or medicines that stimulate the production of steroid hormones (corticotropins) (see section Other medicines and SODIUM MONICA CHLORIDE).

In case of prolonged treatment, potassium must also be given to you to prevent potassium levels in the blood from falling (hypokalaemia).
During treatment you will need to monitor the amount of fluids in the body, the salts present in the blood (plasma osmolarity) and the regulation of acid substances in the blood (acid-base balance).

SODIUM MONIC CHLORIDE must be used in one go immediately after opening the container and any remaining unused medicine must be discarded. The solution must be clear, colorless and free of visible particles.
This medicine must be injected carefully and slowly into a vein.

Children
This medicine should be administered with caution to children.

Possible side effects
Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.

The following side effects may occur:
Not known (frequency cannot be estimated from the available data)
- Increased levels of sodium in the blood (hypernatraemia), increased volume of the blood (hypervolemia), increased levels of chloride in the blood (hyperchloraemia) which may cause a loss of other salts (bicarbonates) resulting in increased acidity of the blood (acidosis);
- Headache (cephalea), dizziness, restlessness, fever, irritability, weakness, muscle stiffness, convulsions, coma, death;
- Drowsiness, confusional states;
- Reduced tearing;
- Increased heart rate (tachycardia);
- Lowering (hypotension) or increasing (hypertension) of blood pressure, accumulation of fluids in the lungs (pulmonary edema) and in the legs and ankles (peripheral edema);
- Difficulty breathing (dyspnea), blocked breathing (respiratory arrest);
- Thirst, reduced salivation, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain;
- Problems with the functioning of the kidneys (renal failure);
- Infection at the infusion site, pain or local reaction, irritation of the vein, formation of blood clots in the vein (thrombosis) or inflammation of the vein (phlebitis) extending from the infusion site, leakage of the injected solution from the vein (extravasation) .
