VetPen

Starter Kits

Description
Pen for automatic insulin administration, for veterinary use only.
VetPen is equipped with special lubricated VetPen 29G/12 mm needles. VetPen must always be used with 29G/12mm VetPen needles.

Instructions for use
Inserting the cartridge
Before inserting, flip the insulin cartridge up and down at least 10 times until the insulin appears uniformly milky. Do not use if, even after mixing carefully, there are agglomerates in the insulin.
Remove the pen cap and unscrew the pen body from the cartridge holder. Verify that the internal piston is fully retracted. If the internal piston is out, screw the internal piston back on by grasping the two beveled sides of the white cylinder on the pen body with your thumb and forefinger. Rotate the pen body until the internal piston is fully retracted.
Load the insulin cartridge into the holder, inserting the metal cap first.
Gently but firmly screw the cartridge holder to the pen body.

Preparing the insulin pen
Remove the protective film from a new needle. Screw the needle directly onto the cartridge holder. Remove the outer protective cap from the needle. Replace the pen cap on the insulin pen. Flip the pen up and down at least 10 times.
It is important to remove all air from the cartridge before use, to avoid injecting air and to ensure correct dosing. Select 1 unit on the dose selector.
Place the pen vertically with the needle pointing up. Gently tap the cartridge with your fingers several times to push any air bubbles to the top of the cartridge. Press the release button and hold it towards the needle until the starting line on the dose selector returns to the arrow on the body of the pen.
It is possible that, before the pen is ready for use, a small amount of insulin escapes from the needle (for example when the air has not yet been completely eliminated). To confirm that the pen has been set up properly, ensure that no air is visible through the cartridge window during rotation.
Your insulin pen is now set up and ready for use.

Administration of the dose to the animal
Make sure the arrow on the pen body is aligned with the starting line on the dose selector. Select the number of units needed according to your veterinarian's advice.
Never attempt to force the dose selector back, as this may damage the pen and cause incorrect dosing. If you accidentally select too high a dose, do not give it to your pet. The incorrect dose must be completely expelled and disposed of appropriately (e.g. down the drain). Select the correct dose prescribed by your veterinarian.
Before injecting, make sure that the arrow on the body of the pen points to the correct number of units on the dose selector.
The site and method of administration must be those indicated by the veterinarian. The injection must be carried out subcutaneously lateral to the midline of the back (from 2 to 5 cm), varying the injection site in the area between the shoulder blades and the loins. After inserting the needle, press the injection button towards the needle and keep it pressed until the starting line on the dose selector returns towards the arrow on the body of the pen. Releasing the button prematurely will result in an incomplete dose delivery. After the starting line on the dose selector has returned to the arrow on the body of the pen, wait for at least 5 seconds before removing the needle from the skin. If your pet sheds the needle, or if the needle is removed before at least 5 seconds have elapsed, do not administer another dose. Wait until you give your pet his usual dose with the next injection.
If the dose dial stops before the starting line on the dose dial has returned to the arrow on the body of the pen it means that the animal has not received the full dose. If only a partial dose has been given, do not give another dose. Wait until you give your pet his usual dose with the next injection.
If some insulin spontaneously drips or squirts out of the needle when you remove the VetPen needle from the skin, a partial dose may have been administered. Do not give another dose. Wait until you give your pet his usual dose with the next injection. Check that the VetPen has been set up correctly.
If insulin drips spontaneously or squirts out of the needle after two consecutive administrations, contact your veterinarian for advice on how to prepare and use the VetPen.

Removing the needle and replacing the cartridge
Insert the needle into the remover and unscrew it. Press the blue button on the device to release the needle. Always check that the needle has been removed. Close the pen with its cap. Dispose of used needles carefully, as recommended by your veterinarian or local regulations.

Before replacing the cartridge, always ensure that the needle has been removed to avoid accidental injury. Then, unscrew the cartridge holder from the pen body and remove the cartridge. Screw the internal piston back on, grasping the two beveled sides of the white cylinder on the pen body with your thumb and forefinger. Rotate the pen body until the internal piston is fully retracted. Then load the next cartridge.
Note: If the internal piston is not screwed back in properly, it can damage the VetPen.

Warnings
The VetPen should only be used after consulting your veterinarian.
Refer to the Caninsulin cartridge package insert for insulin storage conditions before and during use.
VetPen is for use with Caninsulin 2.7ml cartridges only.
Always ensure that the VetPen has been completely prepared in accordance with the instructions in the package insert. Failure to follow correct preparation procedures may lead to inadequate administration of the dose.
To avoid potential damage to the VetPen, never select a dose and push the release button without a cartridge inserted in the holder.
A new needle must be used for each injection.
The needle must be removed with the appropriate device and must be disposed of safely immediately after each injection. If you leave the needle inserted, it may become blocked, thus changing the dose delivered.
Consult your veterinarian if difficulties occur during the injection or if the animal shows any changes in behavior or clinical condition.

storage
The VetPen should always be stored or transported without the needle and with the cap on. To clean the VetPen, wipe with a damp cloth. Do not immerse in water.
