Description
Vitamin A food supplement. The biological activity of vitamin A is attributable both to retinol and analogues and to various carotenoids which possess pro-vitamin activity. The different provitamin forms are absorbed, transformed into retinol and esterased at the intestinal mucosa. Retinol esters (especially retinol palmitate) are stored in the liver, from where they will be released into circulation, as needed, after hydrolysis to free retinol.
Retinol circulates in the plasma bound to a transporter protein (RBP: Retinol Binding Protein) from which it is then released at the level of the tissues that use it. Plasma levels below 20 mg/dl are an indication of depletion of liver reserves. Vitamin A also plays a role in the process of cellular differentiation, and is therefore very important for the correct development of the individual and his reproductive activity, for the immune response, for the integrity of his tissue system. A vitamin A deficiency can therefore cause difficulties in the development and growth process.
